Singer and songwriter Rae Billing is a well-known name by our editorial staff, thanks in part to her self-titled debut album from 2001, but also to the successors "Blue Black Night" from 2008 and "Walls And Fences" from 2013.

But before starting her solo career, this singer from Toronto also performed lead vocals on the album "Paintings" released in 1996 by the Canadian alt-country band 'Crybaby', a record for which she had also composed the songs.

Unfortunately, 'Crybaby' only had a short life due to Rae Billing's decision to work solo. But see, 22 years after the release of their first album "Paintings" there is now a new album from "Crybaby" on the market under the much explanatory title "Still".

Rae Billing had already brought the band members together again in 2016 for concerts on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the release of their only album. Guitarist Steve Koch, bass player James Henry and drummer Lucky Pete Lambert were the original band members and additional instrumental support was provided by Andrew Aldridge on electric guitar, Scott Bell on bass and Greg Brisco on piano and organ.

The desire to record a completely new album arose when they moved into the studio to record a more than 6-minute cover version of "Ode To Billie Joe", the hit single by Bobbie Gentry from 1967. The album "Still" was eventually formed by that cover song and eleven new songs that Rae Billing had written for 'Crybaby'.

That the musical fire still flares up with this singer and her band is clear from the very high quality of the songs that on "Still", starting with the single "A Melody Behind" (see video). It's almost inevitable that the listener will compare this work with the songs and the emotion-provoking vocal style of Lucinda Williams. The 'twang' of the Fender guitar, which is indispensable for country music, is clearly discernible in almost every track and this gives even more drama and 'tristesse' to the gripping vocals of Rae Billing. That's what we hear in the up-tempo songs like "Ten Miles Wide", "Bring Me On" and "Whistling", but even more emphatically in the ballads "Glass In Sand (Best Of All Worlds)", album title track "Still" and our favorite songs "Oh (The Buffalo Song)", "Somehow" and "Pretty Dance".

Simply impressive and breathtakingly beautiful, this second album "Still" by singer Rae Billing and "Crybaby".

Zangeres en songschrijfster Rae Billing is een bekende naam op onze redactie, mede dankzij haar titelloze debuutplaat uit 2001, maar ook door de opvolgers "Blue Black Night" uit 2008 en "Walls And Fences" uit 2013. Maar voor het beginnen aan haar solocarrière had deze uit Toronto afkomstige zangeres ook al het zangwerk verzorgd op het in 1996 op de markt verschenen album "Paintings" van de Canadese alt.countryformatie 'Crybaby', een plaat waarvoor ze toen ook al de liedjes had gecomponeerd.

Jammer genoeg was de formatie 'Crybaby' ook maar een kort leven beschoren door de keuze van Rae Billing om solo te gaan werken.

Maar zie: 22 jaar na de release van hun eerste album "Paintings" is er een nieuwe plaat van 'Crybaby' op de markt gekomen onder de veel verklarende titel "Still".

Rae Billing had de bandleden al in 2016 terug bij elkaar gebracht voor verjaardagsconcerten ter gelegenheid van de 20e verjaardag van de release van hun enige album. Gitarist Steve Koch, bassist James Henry en drummer Lucky Pete Lambert waren de originele bandleden en bijkomende instrumentale ondersteuning werd verleend door Andrew Aldridge op elektrische gitaar, Scott Bell op bas en Greg Brisco op piano en orgel.

De goesting om een volledig nieuwe plaat op te nemen, ontstond toen ze de studio waren ingetrokken om een meer dan 6 minuten durende coverversie op te nemen van "Ode To Billie Joe", de hitsingle van Bobbie Gentry uit 1967. Het album "Still" werd uiteindelijk gevormd door die coversong en elf nieuwe liedjes die Rae Billing voor 'Crybaby' had geschreven. Dat het muzikale vuur nog altijd hoog oplaait bij deze zangeres en haar band blijkt uit de zeer hoge kwaliteit van de liedjes die we op "Still" kunnen horen, te beginnen met single "A Melody Behind" (zie video). Het zal voor de luisteraar haast onvermijdelijk zijn om dit werk niet te gaan vergelijken met de songs en de emoties opwekkende zangstijl van Lucinda Williams.

De voor countrymuziek onontbeerlijke 'twang' van de Fender-gitaar is hier in haast elke track duidelijk waarneembaar en dit geeft nog meer drama en 'tristesse' aan het aangrijpende zangwerk van Rae Billing. Dat horen we in uptempo gebrachte nummers als "Ten Miles Wide", "Bring Me On" en "Whistling", maar nog nadrukkelijker in de ballads "Glass In Sand (Best Of All Worlds)", albumtiteltrack "Still" en onze favoriete songs "Oh (The Buffalo Song)", "Somehow" en "Pretty Dance".

Gewoonweg imponerend en adembenemend mooi, deze tweede plaat "Still" van zangeres Rae Billing en 'Crybaby'.
